Hello world!

Acne is a problematic condition of the skin that causes blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples, or “zits” as they are commonly called.  Acne occurs when the pores on the surface of the skin becomes plugged.  When your pores become filled with too much oil, dirt, debris, or bacteria it causes a plug in the skin.  The top of the plug can be dark causing a blackhead or it can be light colored causing a whitehead.  If the plug burst open, swelling and red bumps may form.

Causes of Acne

Acne can happen at any age, but it is most common in teenagers due to the hormonal changes they experience.  Seventy-five percent of teenagers have some form of acne at some time during their teen years.

Acne tends to be familial and can most often be brought on by hormonal changes, oily ingredients in makeup, hair products, and moisturizers, certain prescription medications such as steroids and hormones, and excessive sweating.

Chocolate, nuts, and greasy foods have long been thought to cause acne, but research doesn’t confirm this.  However, the prevalence of refined sugars in our food supply may well be a dietary culprit in the amount of acne we see.

Symptoms

Most commonly, acne appears as pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads on the face and shoulders, but it can also show up on the back, trunk, arms, legs, or buttocks.  A physician usually makes a diagnosis of acne just by observing its presence.
